Decision Likely Means Democrats Will Lose Senate Seat

Incumbent Senator Joe Manchin First Elected in 2010

WEB Incumbent Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) will not run for reelection, a decision that likely means Democrats will lose a Senate seat in the narrowly divided chamber. Manchin, who has spent his entire decadeslong political career as a Democrat, said Friday he is leaving the party and registering as an independent.

The move is a major blow to Democrats, who already face an uphill battle to maintain control of the Senate in the 2024 elections. With Manchin's departure, Democrats will have a 50-49 majority in the Senate, and Republicans need to flip just one seat to take control.

Manchin, 75, was first elected to the Senate in 2010. He is a conservative Democrat who has often sided with Republicans on key issues, such as gun rights and abortion. His decision not to run for reelection is likely to make it more difficult for Democrats to pass their legislative agenda in the Senate.
